Yarn Talk #114 – Part 3 – Crafting Hacks: Blocking Boards & Handy Yarn Bowls

It’s the season for crocheting hats, headbands, scarves, vests, and sweaters. If you want to work with high-quality, tried-and-tested yarns, I recommend the DROPS brand. In the package there was DROPS Snow, 50 g/50 m, 100% wool in an unspun texture, available in many colors, heathers, and prints. It’s perfect for a really warm beanie (approx. 3 skeins needed) or a winter crochet bag. I tested the yarn on a super warm beanie using a size 12 KnitPro hook. A new video tutorial for the beanie is on the way. For hats, I recommend getting a really big pom-pom of about 20 cm in diameter.

The next skein was DROPS Big Merino, 50 g/75 m, 100% merino wool. This yarn is warm and fluffy, ideal for headbands, hats (2–3 skeins), cowls, or oversized vests and sweaters. This was my first time using it and I have to say, it was love at first touch. The yarn is very elastic, beautifully warm, spun, and easy to crochet with.  A high-quality baby blanket would be perfect with this yarn. To explore its possibilities, I tested a stitch sample from the book Nomota – Handicraft Textbook from 1935. The pattern didn’t come out exactly as in the book, but it turned into a unique new design.  A new video tutorial for the beanie is coming soon. My hat used two skeins.

The last yarn was DROPS Alpaca, 50 g/167 m, 100% alpaca. You can currently get this yarn at a 29% discount, valid until the end of October. The yarn is soft, light, fluffy, and available in natural shades. Alpaca is suitable for sweaters, scarves, shawls, ponchos, hats, gloves, and long vests. It has a great yardage and excellent warmth. For now, I only tried a swatch, but with four skeins (200 g) it could become either a lace vest, a cowl, or a small shawl.

I was impressed by the blocking board for granny squares. The plastic board has side holes for the pegs so they don’t get lost. You pin the squares to the board and stack them on top of each other. Thanks to the plastic material (3D-printed, eco-friendly PLA), you can even lightly mist your squares and the board won’t be damaged. Blocking makes your squares easier to join together. A great tip for a Christmas gift, don’t you think?

Another clever tool was coasters and bag bottoms from 3D printing with various designs. Made from durable PETG filament, they can handle hot mugs and spills, while looking modern. You can choose from versions with 5 mm or 7 mm holes, adjusted to the thickness of your cord.

And if you make toys, you’ll love crinkle foil – perfect for interactive toys and books for babies, but also for crocheted pet toys. The foil is washable up to 90 °C.
