In today’s video tutorial, we’ll show you how to create a Christmas house ornament using the zigzag wrapping method. The decoration measures 5 cm in diameter, and I used the thin cotton yarn Moonlight, which can be starched.
Vlna-Hep Moonlight comes in 100 g balls with a length of 550 m. It is made of 100% cotton. This yarn is suitable for light summer dresses, skirts, and tops. It is also popular for crocheting doilies, tablecloths, ornaments, and dreamcatchers.
VIDEO TUTORIAL (only Czech)
What do we need to make the zigzag ornament besides Moonlight yarn (color 8002)?
- A polystyrene board (or foam puzzle mat). You need a surface that allows needles to go in easily and stay stable.
- A paper template in the shape of a little house. Mine is a 5×5 cm square plus a roof, drawn on thick cardstock and cut out.
- Plastic wrap to cover the template. Without it, the ornament sticks to the board after starching.
- Liquid starch (Alba efekt) – used undiluted. You can also try sugar starch (2 tbsp sugar + 2 tbsp water), but it requires many layers, so liquid starch is more reliable.
- A brush for applying the starch and a small bowl to pour it into.
- Paper towels to absorb excess starch.
- A pack of medical needles (I used 100 needles from the pharmacy for about 150 CZK). They don’t rust like regular pins, although the first use may leave slight marks. Knitting T-pins also work, but they may darken the yarn too.
May your Moonlight Zigzag House turn out beautifully and decorate your gifts or Christmas tree. How to make the zigzag ornament
- Place the paper template on the board and cover it with plastic wrap.
- Insert needles around the outline, about 1–1.5 cm apart.
- Take the yarn and leave a long tail for hanging (do not starch this part).
- Wrap the end around the top needle (needle #1) three times.
- Wrap around each needle along the outline, making a loop on each one. Go around the shape twice, ending again at needle #1.
- Now create the zigzag part: wrap the yarn between the needles freely and creatively so that each needle has at least two wraps. End at needle #1.
- Finish by outlining the shape two more times. Cut the yarn and tie a knot with the starting tail near needle #1.
Starching
- Keep the yarn tight as you wrap it, guiding it with your fingernail and fingers.
- After wrapping, push all threads down toward the board and apply a generous layer of starch with the brush, especially around and between the needles.
- Blot excess starch with a paper towel.
- Let the ornament dry overnight, ideally near a heater.
Removing the ornament
- Hold the yarn near the board with your fingers as you remove each needle to prevent the threads from separating.
- Work slowly and carefully; this step requires patience.
- Finally, gently lift the ornament off the board.
- The yarn will be covered with tiny starch crystals, giving the piece a beautiful frosted, icy look.
Wishing you lots of success with your zigzag creation!
