Crochet Gift Bag Berry

crochet gift bag pattern

Wrapping a bottle as a gift can often be tricky. The easiest solution is usually a paper bag — quick and effortless. But what if this time you want to be a little more original? If you’ve discovered the soft Berry cords from the Czech brand YarnMellow, you can literally wrap the bottle into a handmade gift.

YarnMellow Berry cords come in two thicknesses: 3 mm and 5 mm. They have a polyester core that gives them shape and strength, while the outer layer is made of recycled cotton. The result is a material that’s exceptionally soft, flexible, and pleasant to the touch. One 300 g skein contains approximately 100 meters of cord.  If you’re using a spool, start crocheting from the center end — this way the spool keeps its shape until the very end. For a hank, simply find the loose end and start crocheting without removing the label. The YarnMellow Berry cords were kindly provided by the e-shop Tvorboshop.cz. You can watch the unboxing video here and read more about the YarnMellow yarn collection in this article.

🎥 VIDEO TUTORIAL (ONLY CZECH)

As for the bag, I used yellow Berry 3 mm cord and started crocheting from the square bottom base. For the base, I made a classic granny square. The first round of the bag consists of front post single crochets — once you make it through that row, the rest is easy and relaxing! You’ll continue with back loop single crochets until you reach the desired height and use up almost the entire skein. I used a 5 mm crochet hook to make the bag extra firm, and I didn’t join the rounds with slip stitches — so the bag has no visible seam.

The square base is great because it fits both square and round bottles perfectly. I made this bag especially for a bottle of Honey Jack Daniel’s, which will be wrapped as a Christmas gift.  I hope your Berry Bag turns out beautifully and brings you joy. The bag is crocheted as a square base from the magic ring.

Start the next round with a turning chain (2 ch = 1 dc), which counts as the first stitch.

For the first round of the bag body, work back post single crochets, continuing in rounds without joining – crochet continuously in back loop single crochets until reaching the desired height.
>Before working the handle, finish the current round with a slip stitch and begin the next one with a turning chain (1 ch = 1 sc).

Bag base, Berry yellow, 5 mm hook

Round 1: Into MR: tch (2 ch = dc), dc, dc, ch 3, dc, dc, dc, ch 3, dc, dc, dc, ch 3, dc, dc, dc, ch 1, dc into tch to close the round.

Round 2: Into corner dc, work tch (2 ch = dc), dc; then 1 dc in each dc from the previous round.

>In the last round (Round 21), before finishing. Place the bag flat in front of you and fold it in half to align the sides evenly.  Count five stitches from the edge and finish the round with a slip stitch in the back loop of the fifth stitch.

Join with a slip stitch.

Round 23:
Work 20–22 sc across the handle chain (depending on your tension).
>At the end of the handle, skip 1 sc from the previous round and work 8 BLO sc between the handles.
>Continue with 20–22 sc across the second handle, skip 1 sc again, and crochet 8 BLO sc between the handles.
Join with a slip stitch.

Round 24:
Insert the hook into the first sc and work 20–22 sc across the handle.
Skip 1 sc, then crochet 6 BLO sc between the handles.
